Histories of St Peter’s

There was a chapel sitting at the top of Market Hill in Sudbury since at least the 12th century but the building we see now was started in the first half of the 14th century by Elizabeth de Burgh before the Black Death. At this time the chancel area (where the altar is) and the tower were probably two seperate buildings. Two later stages of buildings in the later 14th century and the mid 15th century gave us the building we see now. But only on the outside, the inside would have looked so different with all its medieval paintings and decorations. Not forgetting the galleries at the west end (where the main door is) and the box pews surreptitiously removed in the 19th century.
